Dating jade isn't only about shape and decoration — there's a "hard indicator": tool marks. Different eras used different tools, leaving different traces. Here are four typical patterns.

Note: This is about basic dating logic, not authentication. High-end fakes need other features checked together.

1. Four typical tool marks

Different eras used different tools, leaving different traces. From Neolithic to Qing, marks went from coarse to fine.

01
Neolithic

Primitive marks

Stone or wood tools with abrasive sand. Marks are coarse, uneven, lines often broken.

Features
  • Coarse, uneven lines
  • Irregular edges
  • Often covered by polishing
Common pieces
  • Hongshan culture jade
  • Liangzhu culture jade
02
Shang-Zhou

Bronze wheel marks

Bronze tools. Marks are more regular, with parallel and equidistant lines.

Features
  • Regular, parallel lines
  • Slight curve
  • "One-sided slope" effect
Common pieces
  • Shang jade ge, cong
  • Western Zhou bi, huang
03
Warring States–Han

Iron wheel marks

Iron tools made marks sharper and finer. Lines are fluent and strong, often "hair-strand carving".

Features
  • Fine, sharp, fluent lines
  • "Hair-strand" feel
  • Fine polishing
Common pieces
  • Warring States dragon pendants
  • Han bi, jade suit plaques
04
Ming–Qing

Fine wheel marks

Foot-powered wheels. Marks are fine and even. Lines are neat, often with raised or reduced carving.

Features
  • Fine, even lines
  • Neat and regular
  • Smooth polishing
Common pieces
  • Ming jade belt plaques
  • Qing jade mountains, plaques

2. Comparison

Period Tool Marks Examples

Warring States–HanIron wheelFine, sharpDragon pendants, bi
Ming–QingFoot-powered wheelFine, evenBelt plaques, mountains
Tip: Tool marks are only one clue. Combine with shape, decoration, stains, and patina.

3. How to look

  1. Lines: coarse or fine? parallel or irregular?
  2. Edges: any "one-sided slope" or "hair-strand"?
  3. Polish: how much? does it cover the marks?
  4. Overall: do the marks match the shape and decoration?

4. Common misconceptions

  • Has marks = old — marks can be faked
  • Coarser = older — not necessarily
  • Fine = Ming-Qing — Warring States–Han also fine
  • Marks alone date it — combine with other features
