Jade stains form over centuries or millennia of burial. But artificial staining is now very good — similar colour, different structure. Here are four common stains and how to tell natural from artificial.

Note: This is about basic concepts and identification clues, not authentication. High-end fakes still need a lab.

1. Four common stains

Stains form when external substances seep into the jade. Different burial environments produce different colours.

SOIL

Soil stain

Iron and manganese from soil seep in. Yellow-brown tones.

Natural: surface inward, gradual.
Fake: sits on top, dead colour.
BLOOD

Blood stain

Once thought to be blood, actually iron rust. Red-brown tones.

Natural: sinks in, natural texture.
Fake: on surface, washes off.
MERCURY

Mercury stain

Actually mercury or black-gold stain. Dark grey-black. Common in ancient jade.

Natural: black with grey layers.
Fake: dead black, no transition.
BRONZE

Bronze stain

Buried with bronzes; copper rust seeps in. Green-blue tones.

Natural: green with blue, bonded to jade.
Fake: garish, looks painted on.

2. Natural vs artificial

Natural

  • Distribution: surface inward, gradual
  • Colour: natural, soft, layered
  • Structure: bonded with jade, deep
  • Feel: consistent with surroundings
  • Loupe: stain follows jade cracks inward

Artificial

  • Distribution: on surface only
  • Colour: dead, bright, no layers
  • Structure: stays on surface
  • Feel: rough, dry
  • Loupe: colour on surface, no depth

3. Comparison

Feature Natural Artificial
DistributionInward, gradualSurface only
ColourSoft, layeredDead, bright
StructureDeep in jadeSurface only
FeelWarm, consistentRough, dry
LoupeFollows cracks inwardNo depth
Tip: Natural stain grows in; artificial stain is painted on. A loupe check for depth is the most direct method.

4. How to look

  1. Distribution: inward with transitions?
  2. Colour: natural and layered, or dead and bright?
  3. Structure: loupe — does it go deep?
  4. Feel: consistent with surroundings?

5. Common misconceptions

  • Stain = old — stains can be faked
  • Deeper = older — could just be dye
  • Blood stain = blood — it's iron rust
  • Pretty stain = real — pretty might be artificial
