Buying a piece is only the beginning. How well you store it decides what it looks like decades later. Temperature, humidity, light, dust, pests, contact — any one can ruin a piece.

Note: General principles, not professional restoration advice. Different materials (paintings, porcelain, bronze, ivory) need different care — consult a professional.

1. Six environmental factors

Each factor can be destructive, and each has a countermeasure.

T

Temperature

Rapid changes cause expansion and contraction, leading to cracks and warping.

What to do
  • Keep at 18–22°C
  • Avoid AC drafts, heaters
  • Avoid frequent moves
H

Humidity

High humidity grows mould and rust; low humidity dries and cracks. Humidity is the number one killer.

What to do
  • Keep at 45–55% RH
  • Monitor with a hygrometer
  • Use dehumidifier / humidifier
L

Light

UV fades paintings, brittles paper and silk, yellows ivory. Sunlight and spotlights are threats.

What to do
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • UV-filter glass or curtains
  • Don't leave LED spots on long
D

Dust

Dust abrades surfaces, clogs crevices, absorbs moisture. Left alone, it erodes patina.

What to do
  • Dust covers, glass cases
  • Soft brush, soft cloth
  • Never wipe antiques with wet cloth
P

Pests

Paintings, bamboo, wood, ivory, and furniture are high-risk. Once pests strike, damage is nearly irreversible.

What to do
  • Camphor chest, pest paper
  • Regular checks, ventilation
  • Isolate immediately if found
C

Contact

Hand sweat, oil, acid erode surfaces. Frequent touching wears patina and rust.

What to do
  • Wear cotton gloves
  • Don't touch directly
  • Don't talk or cough on pieces

2. Quick reference

Factor Risk Advice
TemperatureCracks, warping18–22°C, stable
HumidityMould, rust, cracks45–55% RH
LightFading, brittlenessAvoid sunlight, UV
DustAbrasion, erosionCovers, soft brush
PestsIrreversible damageCamphor, pest paper
ContactSweat, oil erosionCotton gloves
Tip: Of the six, humidity and light are the most overlooked and the most irreversible. Control those two and you're halfway there.

3. Key focus by material

  1. Paintings: moisture, light, pests; loosen scrolls periodically
  2. Porcelain: shock, impact; secure display cases
  3. Bronze: moisture, chloride; avoid wet cloth
  4. Jade: drops, heat; regular handling OK
  5. Ivory: dryness, temperature swings; avoid sun
  6. Coins: moisture, hand contact; coin holders, desiccant

4. Common misconceptions

  • Wipe antiques with wet cloth — moisture erodes
  • Seal in plastic — traps moisture, mould grows
  • Display by a window — sunlight and UV kill
  • Handle daily — wears patina and surface
