1
Receipt ·

2
Exhibition ·

3
Family ·

4
Expert ·

"My grandfather bought it from an old collector." — every seller says this. But provenance isn't a sentence; it's a chain of evidence. With evidence, it's provenance; without, it's just a story.

Note: This is about reading provenance, not authentication. Authenticity needs physical examination and expert opinion.

1. The provenance chain: four kinds of evidence

Provenance isn't one document; it's a combination. The more complete and specific, the more reliable.

1
Receipt

Original purchase records

Invoices, receipts, auction records. The most direct and hardest evidence.

Strength:
2
Exhibition

Exhibition and publication records

Museum or gallery catalogues, published books, journals. Verifiable.

Strength:
3
Family

Family inheritance records

Family photos, letters, old pictures, wills. Support the chain, but must be specific.

Strength:
4
Expert

Expert opinion and inscriptions

Written opinions from experts, scholars, or labs. Authority varies by who signed.

Strength:

2. Strong vs weak evidence

Strong

  • Verifiable written documents
  • Auction records and catalogues
  • Exhibition and publication records
  • Specific, matchable family records

Weak

  • Oral stories, unverifiable
  • "My grandfather said" or "the old collector said"
  • Vague old photos, unmatchable
  • Unsigned inscriptions, unsourced opinions

3. Evidence strength table

Tip: Provenance isn't authenticity. A provenanced piece can still be fake; an unprovenanced piece can still be real. But clear provenance means higher price and easier resale.

4. How to ask

  1. Be specific: when, where, at what price
  2. Ask for documents: invoices, catalogues, photos, letters
  3. Match: do the documents match the object?
  4. Verify: check exhibition and auction records
  5. Judge: a moving story is worth less than one document

5. Common misconceptions

  • Story = provenance — story isn't evidence
  • Clear provenance = authentic — two different things
  • No provenance = fake — many real pieces lack provenance
  • Expert inscription = good — depends on who signed
