Negotiating isn't haggling. Haggling is pushing the price down; negotiating is finding a point both sides accept. Experienced buyers don't talk much, but every line counts.

Note: General negotiating principles for antiques, not investment advice. Actual deals depend on the piece, channel, and relationship.

Rule 1: Ask about provenance first, not price

Don't open with "what's your best price". Ask where it came from. Let the seller speak first, so you have room to judge.

Scene 01 · Ask provenance
Buyer
When did you acquire this? Is the provenance clear?Don't ask price first. Let the seller talk.
Seller
Bought it from an old collector a few years ago. Has a certificate.

Rule 2: Don't show how much you like it

The more you like it, the less they'll move. Look at other pieces first, come back later. Let them think you're "considering", not "decided".

Rule 3: Point out flaws before talking price

Pointing out flaws isn't to lowball — it's to align both sides on what the piece actually is. Once flaws are clear, price becomes easier.

Scene 02 · Flaws
Buyer
There's a small chip on the glaze and wear on the foot. Is that already reflected in the price?Acknowledge flaws, then negotiate.
Seller
Yes, that's why the asking price isn't higher.

Rule 4: Don't slash to the bottom in one go

Offering half right away makes the seller think you don't know the market — or aren't serious. Probe in small steps and watch their response.

✓ Do

  • Ask the lowest price first
  • Move in 5–10% steps
  • Signal you can decide today
  • Use cash / instant payment as leverage

✗ Don't

  • Offer half right away
  • Push back and forth repeatedly
  • Say "cheaper elsewhere"
  • Show you "must have it"

Rule 5: Let the seller feel they won

A deal isn't zero-sum. Let them feel the transaction worked, so next time they think of you first. Sometimes paying a little more buys a long-term relationship.

Rule 6: If the price won't work, walk away

Not everything must be bought. If you can't agree, leave politely. Good sellers will contact you later.

Scene 03 · Walk away politely
Buyer
That's beyond my budget. If it changes, feel free to contact me.Leave an open ending.
Seller
Alright, let me think. Come by anytime.
