New collectors often ask: can I tell roughly which Qing period a blue-and-white bowl belongs to without thermoluminescence?
For Qing folk kiln blue-and-white, three basics — glaze, body, pigment tone — get you surprisingly far.
1. Glaze: bright or soft?
- Shunzhi–early Kangxi: bluish-white, thicker, harder sheen.
- Mid–late Kangxi: softer, "tight skin bright glaze".
- Yongzheng–Qianlong: finer and whiter.
- Jiaqing onward: thinner glaze, weaker sheen.
2. Body: read the foot
Kangxi bodies are fine and slightly糯; two-tier foot and eel-back are common. Later folk wares show more iron spots; flat base and slanted cut appear toward late Qing.
3. Pigment tone: blue tells time
- Kangxi: crisp, layered cobalt, "five shades of ink".
- Yongzheng–Qianlong: softer, grey-blue.
- Jiaqing–Daoguang: duller, floating grey-blue.
- Late Qing–Republic: "foreign blue" — bright, thin, purplish.
Combine all three
Soft glaze + two-tier foot + layered cobalt → mid–late Kangxi to Yongzheng. Thin whitish glaze + slanted foot + purplish blue → late Qing–Republic.
