Bamboo, wood, and ivory pieces naturally crack over time — collectors call these "smile lines". But they can be forced. Here's a crack atlas comparing natural and artificial.

Note: This is about basic differences, not authentication. High-end fakes need patina, carving, and material checked together.

1. Four crack patterns

Natural and artificial cracks differ in direction, width, and edges. Compare the visuals at a glance.

Natural

Fine, natural direction

Fine, natural direction, often along the material grain. Edges are smooth and patinated. Fine, layered lines.

Natural

Consistent, regular

Often one direction, parallel, evenly spaced. Fine and naturally graded. Consistent and regular.

Artificial

Stiff, crossing

Often stiff and crossing, random direction. Edges are rough, no patina, colour white or red. Crossing and irregular.

Artificial

Wide, rough edges

Often wide, rough edges, dead colour. Lacks the fineness of natural cracks. Wide and dead colour.

2. Comparison

Feature Natural Artificial
DirectionNatural, regularStiff, crossing
WidthFineWider
EdgesSmooth, patinatedRough, no patina
ColourNatural, layeredWhite or red
FeelSmoothScratchy
Tip: Natural cracks age in; artificial ones are made. Fine, regular, patinated — these are the key features of natural cracks.

3. How to look

  1. Direction: natural and regular, or stiff and crossing?
  2. Width: fine or wide?
  3. Edges: smooth and patinated?
  4. Colour: natural and layered?
  5. Feel: smooth or scratchy?

4. Common misconceptions

  • Has cracks = old — cracks can be forced
  • More cracks = older — could be artificial
  • Wide cracks = older — natural cracks are often fine
  • Cracks = worthless — natural cracks are part of the value
